Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth, also referred to as third molars, get their name by being the last teeth to come in during young adulthood. As part of your regular dental exams, Dr. Eugene Mumford will examine you to determine if your wisdom teeth are healthy and properly positioned.

Every patient is unique, but many times, wisdom teeth may need to be removed when there is:
•  Pain
•  Infection
•  Cysts
•  Tumors
•  Damage to adjacent teeth
•  Gum disease

Dr. Eugene Mumford, or a specialist that he refers you to, may also recommend removal to prevent problems or for other reasons, such as when removal is part of another treatment plan.

Wisdom teeth that are not removed should continue to be monitored, because they could potentially cause issues in the future. As with many other health conditions, as people age, they are at greater risk for health problems and that includes potential problems with their wisdom teeth.

Tooth Extraction Post-Operative Instructions

Following tooth extraction you may experience bleeding, oozing, soreness, or moderate to severe pain. Bleeding should stop by 8-12 hours following the extraction. If you experience significant bleeding past this time please call our office immediately at (360) 779-3211. Oozing of pink fluid for 1-2 days is normal.

Discomfort following the tooth extraction is best managed with a mild analgesic like Tylenol, Advil or Aleve. If you experience severe pain that lasts more than 2-3 days after your extraction please call our office at (360) 779-3211.

Healing should be as smooth as possible following tooth extraction. It is important to disturb the extraction site as little as possible. Remember to eat a soft diet for 24 hours following the extraction. Avoid vigorously rinsing with any type of liquid for the first 24 hours.

After 24 hours, rinse with strong warm salt water for 1 minute a couple of times daily for 3-4 days. This will reduce the number of bacteria in your mouth and will promote better healing.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to call us.
